- - Oct. 8, 1871, The Great Chicago Fire starts. Louis M. Cohn (1853-1942), a wealthy Chicago business man leaves a large donation to Northwestern University along with a note claiming he and friends were shooting dice in Mrs. O’Leary barn when he knocked over a Lantern which started the great fire. (he claimed he was on a “hot” roll when he hit the lantern)
