Mystical Lodestone – A lucky charm
The mysterious Lodestone, sometimes spelled Loadstone, according to the Webster’s dictionary it is “a magnetite possessing polarity, and something that strongly attracts.” Over 2,000 years ago, ancient Greeks and Chinese explorers discovered that some rocks are natural magnets. These rocks are a form of iron ore called Magnetite. During the Middle Ages sailors felt the mystical powers of the Lodestone. The magnetic properties of the Lodestone were used to magnetize the sailing ships compass. Without a working compass sailors could become lost at sea. Because the ships Lodestone was so valuable, it was the law of the sea that any sailor who tampered with it was tortured or put to death.
This magnetic stone has also been used for ages as a good luck charm and it is still carried by people who have implicit faith in its mystical powers. Many people believe it causes them to have luck in almost everything they undertake. Those who have faith in the Lodestone’s power would not be without a pair of them on their person at any time. It is thought one stone drives evil away while the other stone draws luck. That is why they are normally found in pairs. However, this idea of a lucky charm is of course, according to one’s own individual beliefs and superstitions, but what is luck anyway?
