Casino personal
To run a large modern casino today requires a great many specialized people. I’m not talking about electricians, carpenters, or housekeeping types, I’m talking about gambling specialists. You’ll only find these unique occupations in casinos. Here is a short description of some of them that you might run into, and some others that are there, but you might not know it.
Dealer – this is the main person you’ll come in contact with at most of the table games like blackjack, craps, roulette, and other table games. The dealer makes change, takes and gives chips, deals cards, or controls the dice or wheel. They usually work 40 to 50 minutes at a table, than take a 20-minute break.
Keno runner – solicits keno tickets from throughout the casino area and delivers them to the keno lounge where all transactions are recorded. Delivers results and payments to winning players.
Change person – assigned to the slot area to provide change and on big payouts, cash for winning players.
Floor man – supervises a group of tables within the gambling pit. He or she can extend credit, give comps, and settle disputes. The floor man answers to the pit boss.
Pit boss – is the supervisor in charge of the entire pit area, including the blackjack table, roulette, craps and Big 6 wheel. He or she is the final authority in any disputes.
Shift supervisor – responsible for all actions in the casino during their shift. He or she reports to the casino manager. Oversees any big payouts, and ensures that enough staff are available for all the games.
Casino manager – responsible for the entire casino operation and is the key manger for all gaming. Sets the tone of the casino and decides what rules are used for the games, how many tables there are, and how the pits are laid out.
General manager – head of the organization and may even be an owner. Makes the major decisions about everything. In large casino resorts, he’s usually responsible for other areas in addition to the casino, such as the restaurant, entertainment and hotel.
Eye-in-the-sky – part of the security system in a casino. This department uses cameras suspended in bubbles on the ceiling throughout the casino. With these videos, special surveillance staff observes and records all action throughout the casino, looking for cheating players, and sometimes even for cheating employees.
Outside man – usually a former card counter or law enforcement officer. Works undercover looking for cheats, dishonest employees and card counters.
Gaming Commission – an official state or federal government agency that issues licenses and governs all gaming. Has oversight authority for enforcement of rules and regulations as applied to casinos.
