Becoming a better player

The real object of gambling is to win. That sounds simple enough…well, it is and it isn’t. Some players think winning is to get closer to 21 than the dealer at blackjack, or to pick a straight-up number at roulette, or get a 7 on the come-out roll at craps. But this isn’t necessarily true. To win, what you really want to do is beat the dealer. This concept applies to blackjack, roulette, craps, and many other games. At blackjack you can win on 13 if the dealer busts; you can win on red or black at roulette; and at craps you want lots of numbers to appear before the 7. In other words, you don’t have to hit the big jackpot every time to be a winner. Look at it this way: casinos win a little all the time, and those wins add up to a lot. If you win a little all the time, at the end of your visit or session, you could also end up with a lot. There are many things you can do to improve as a player. In fact, as a player, you have more options than the casino has. Here is a list of some of the things you can do.

  1. Select the best casino. You should know that all casinos are not created equal. Find those with the best rules, best prices (minimum bets at the tables, affordable machines) and an atmosphere that is friendly, with a helpful and enjoyable staff. Find out where staff and locals play.
  2. Select the best games. Craps with double or better odds, single zero wheels, blackjack with liberal rules, and high payouts at slots. They are out there you just have to look for them.
  3. Select the best table or machine. Look for winning signs like happy and noisy players, lots of chips owned by players, lots of noise from machines.
  4. Walk and not play. Avoid playing if you don’t feel comfortable, or don’t like the conditions. Only play with a budgeted bankroll. If on a losing streak, don’t push it. There is always another day, another session, or another time.
